Whether it is a home or a shopping mall, any new construction site requires solid waterproofing to boost its lifespan and interior comfort. Waterproofing can also act as a preventive measure against any future water damage. In a country like Singapore, the weather conditions fluctuate all year around from high humidity to heavy rainfall. During annual monsoon seasons , homeowners have to deal with leaky roofs. If the water accumulates into large puddles it can be hazardous for the people in the building. While a high intact waterproofing solution may be a hefty investment, it is far more affordable than paying to repair damaged property. Invest in the roof waterproofing to ensure the structural integrity of your building for years to come.

What Is A Waterproofing Membrane?

Typically, a waterproofing membrane is a waterproof material that is carefully laid onto a surface. This helps with strengthening the lifespan of a building and prevents any external hydrostatic pressure forces from compromising on its durability. They can be adhesive or spread on top of the foundation material they are meant to protect. The waterproofing membrane is a universally accepted solution and there are a variety of membranes you will find available in the market. It may be applied onto balconies, roof decks, basements, concrete water tanks, plant beds, and more areas.

Types Of Waterproofing Membranes

 Types Of Waterproofing Membranes

Waterproofing membranes can be classified into two types: Sheet Based Membranes and Liquid Based (Fluid Applied) Waterproofing Membranes. The Liquid waterproofing systems are capable of adapting to different weather conditions and movements. Therefore, it can continue to perform even while being exposed to harsh climate conditions  for extensive periods of time

Usually, water-solvent membranes are applied by hand or sprayed with a gas torch trowel onto the surfaces during installation. It is a faster and more practical option. The application can be completed within a day depending on the surface layout. Water-based membranes are straightforward and require no extra seams and joints like other waterproofing systems.

Waterproofing Membrane Application Process

Waterproofing Membrane Application Process

When it comes to waterproofing, there a few things to consider for structural integrity and the process is quite simple:

Step 1: Preparation

Before you undertake any waterproofing project, preparing the surface is essential. This could be the walls, floors or the roof. This can guarantee a better outcome. Firstly, every loose particle such as grime or paint is removed. If any defects are spotted, it should be repaired. Finally, the surface must be thoroughly cleaned and free from debris.

Step 2: Surface Primer

In some situations, waterproofing contractors put on a primer application prior to painting the surface. It penetrates deeply into interior and exterior surfaces to protect concrete and other materials.

Step 3: Application

The next comes the application. Paint is evenly applied using a brush, spray, or roller. However, it should be noted that a waterproofing membrane takes about  24 to 72 hours to dry. In this case, applying paint should be done when the weather is sunny, not when there are heavy showers. The paint will take a lot longer to dry when it is raining and this will greatly delay the whole process.

Step 4: On Safety Equipment

Since the whole installation involves very tough material properties, it is absolutely necessary to wear protective equipment before applying the coating for the waterproofing membrane. Waterproofing contractors generally wear gloves, boots, goggles and overalls to refrain from contact with dust particles.
