membrane waterproofing

Waterproofing is the process of applying an impermeable barrier on surfaces. These surfaces include parts of a building, like the roof, walls and foundation, to prevent water from seeping into the structure and causing internal damage.

There are five common types of waterproofing materials that range from cement to bituminous membranes.

1. Cementitious waterproofing

Cementitious waterproofing

Cementitious waterproofing is one of the easiest waterproofing methods as its materials are readily available at most cement suppliers. Additionally, they are easy to mix and apply in internal wet areas such as toilet floors. Many waterproofing contractors in Singapore will use cement for indoor waterproofing as it does not experience the usual expansion and contraction process from being exposed to sunlight and weathering.

2. Liquid-applied membrane waterproofing

Liquid-applied membranes consist of a primer coat and a couple of top coats applied via spray, roller or trowel. Being liquid, this waterproofing technique offers much more flexibility than cement as it turns into a rubbery waterproofing coating on the surface upon drying. On roofs, the liquid membrane can be directly applied onto old roofing materials without having to strip them off and causing disturbance to the occupants under the roof.

3. Thermoplastic membrane waterproofing

Thermoplastic membrane waterproofing

Compared to other waterproofing systems, thermoplastic membranes are much more UV and heat resistant. This makes them suitable for flat roof waterproofing. They consist of a blend of polypropylene, ethylene-propylene and is often reinforced with polyester. Additionally, UV absorbers, colourants and flame retardants are commonly added to the membrane for it to have long-lasting durability.

4. Bituminous membrane waterproofing

Bituminous membranes are polymer grade and have reinforced fibre properties that provide flexibility and excellent protection against water. Some waterproofing contractors in Singapore may refer to this waterproofing method as an asphalt membrane due to the bitumen-based materials used. When applying the bituminous membrane to surfaces, contractors would either use the torch-on or self-adhesive function that the membrane provides.

5. Polyurethane membrane waterproofing

Polyurethane membrane waterproofing

Polyurethane membrane waterproofing is a more expensive option as compared to other waterproofing systems. They offer excellent adhesive properties on concrete, cement sheeting, wet area surfaces, and plaster surfaces. As such, they are commonly used on flat roofs exposed to weathering and prone to water leaks. Polyurethane membranes are highly flexible but can be rather sensitive to the moisture content present. Therefore, the contractor has to ensure that the concrete surface is dry before application to prevent the membrane from peeling or separating after a while.
